Philipkutty's Farm
Near Kumarakom
Seven cottages on a farm island, and the family who farm it.
The place
A working farm on reclaimed land in Lake Vembanad, run by three generations of the same family. The cottages stand in a line along the water with the boats going past the veranda, and meals are taken with the family rather than in a restaurant. It is the best place we know to understand how Kuttanad actually works, and the cooking is why people come back.
What is there
- All meals included, cooked by the family
- Cooking lessons, if you ask
- Canoes and country boats off the jetty
- Birdwatching — this is Kumarakom's water
- Coconut, nutmeg, cocoa and banana growing between the cottages
- Ayurvedic treatments arranged
Getting there
About two and a half hours from Kochi airport, the last stretch by boat.
