The Imperial

Janpath, New Delhi

Delhi's landmark hotel, and the best introduction to India there is.

The place

Opened in 1936 on Janpath, with one of the great collections of colonial-era Indian art hanging in its corridors — enough of it that the hotel runs tours of its own walls. Large, formal and genuinely grand rather than expensively decorated. For a first night in India it is hard to better.

What is there

  • An art collection you can be walked through
  • Central New Delhi, on Janpath
  • Pool and spa
  • Several restaurants, one of them a Delhi institution
  • Connaught Place a short walk
  • The last of the true colonial hotels still run as one

Getting there

Central Delhi, 40 minutes to an hour from the airport.
