Tea Bungalow

Fort Kochi

A tea company's guesthouse, ten rooms, in the old spice quarter.

The place

Built in 1912 as a guesthouse for a British tea company and still laid out like one — high ceilings, deep verandas, plantation furniture. The rooms are named after the Arabian and Indian Ocean ports the trade ran to: Malabar, Zanzibar, and so on. Close to Mattancherry and the godowns where the pepper is still graded.

What is there

  • Plantation-house rooms, six in the old building
  • Garden and pool
  • Walking distance of the spice markets
  • Bicycles
  • Boat trips arranged
  • Quieter than the parade-ground end of the fort

Getting there

Fort Kochi, an hour and a half from the airport.
