Steps down to the Ganges at Varanasi

Uttarakhand & Uttar Pradesh · 15 days

A journey down the Ganges

From where it comes out of the mountains to where it is burned beside.

The journey

Delhi and Agra first, then north to Haridwar where the Ganges leaves the hills, up to the confluence at Deoprayag, and afterwards down the river — Allahabad, where it meets the Yamuna, and Varanasi, where the whole thing arrives at its conclusion. Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, is an afternoon out from there.

Route

  1. Delhi
  2. Agra
  3. Haridwar
  4. Deoprayag

What stays with you

  • 01The Taj Mahal, on a day trip out of Delhi rather than in a rush
  • 02Haridwar at the point the river leaves the mountains
  • 03Deoprayag, where the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda become the Ganges
  • 04The confluence at Allahabad
  • 05Varanasi, with two days in it rather than one
  • 06Sarnath, where the first sermon was given

Day by day

A shape rather than a timetable. Days move, and most people move one or two of them.

1 – 2

Fly to Delhi. A day in the old city and the new.

3 – 4

By road to Agra for the Taj Mahal, and back to Delhi.

5

A last morning in Delhi, then north to Haridwar.

6 – 7

Haridwar, up to Deoprayag, and back by way of Rishikesh.

8

A free morning, then the night train to Allahabad.

9

Allahabad and the confluence.

10 – 11

On to Varanasi. Two days, one of them unplanned.

12

Sarnath in the morning; the afternoon your own.

13 – 15

Fly to Delhi, a last day, and home.
