The Taj Mahal at Agra in the last of the light

Delhi, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu & Kerala · 22 days

North to south, the whole way down

Delhi to the backwaters in three weeks. The first trip, for people who want all of it.

The journey

India top to bottom, which is a thing people ask for and which is genuinely worth doing once. The Mughal north and Rajasthan for the first nine days — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur — then a flight south and a complete change of country: Pondicherry, the Chola temples, Madurai, the tea at Munnar, and the backwaters at the end. Two Indias, and the flight in the middle is the point.

  • 03The flight south, and how completely different the country is at the other end
  • 04The Chola temples around Kumbakonam, which are the best of the south
  • 05Madurai, and the crossing into Kerala over the ghats at Munnar
  • 06Fort Kochi, a night on the backwaters, and the beach at Mararikulam

Day by day

A shape rather than a timetable. Days move, and most people move one or two of them.

1 – 2

Into Delhi, and a day in it.

3

To Agra, and the Taj.

4 – 5

Jaipur — Amber, the City Palace, the old city.

6 – 7

Jodhpur and Mehrangarh.

8 – 9

Udaipur and the lake.

10 – 11

South by air, and on to Pondicherry.

12

Kumbakonam, and the Chola temples around it.

13 – 14

Madurai. The Meenakshi temple, twice.

15 – 16

Over the ghats to Munnar, and two nights in the tea.

17 – 19

Down to Fort Kochi, then Alleppey and a night on the water.

20 – 21

Mararikulam. The coast, and nothing asked of you.

22

Out through Kochi.
