Tea gardens at Coonoor in the Nilgiris

Kerala, Tamil Nadu & Karnataka · 14 days

The hill stations

Munnar, the Nilgiris, Mudumalai and Coorg — fourteen days above the heat.

The journey

A journey that stays high. It runs along the Western Ghats rather than across them: Munnar, then over to Pollachi and up to Coonoor in the Nilgiris, down into the Mudumalai and Bandipur forests, and north into the Kodagu coffee country before dropping to Mysore. Three states, one mountain range, and the temperature rarely above the mid-twenties.

  2. Munnar

  • 03Coonoor, the Nilgiri tea, and the mountain railway if the timing allows

  • 06Namdroling at Bylakuppe, and Mysore at the end

Day by day

A shape rather than a timetable. Days move, and most people move one or two of them.

1 – 2

Into Kochi, and a day in the old town before going up.

3 – 4

Munnar. The estates, and Eravikulam on the second morning.

5

East to Pollachi, below the Anamalais.

6

Up into the Nilgiris to Coonoor.

7 – 9

Down to Mudumalai. Three nights on the forest edge, with drives at both ends of the day.

10 – 11

North into Kodagu. A coffee estate, and the country around Madikeri.

12

Bylakuppe and Namdroling on the way to Mysore.

13

Mysore — the palace, and the market.

14

Up to Bangalore and out.
