A houseboat on the Kerala backwaters

Kerala backwaters · 5 days, 4 nights

Kochi to Kollam, the whole backwater

Five days on one boat, ending at the village where the houseboat was invented.

The journey

Most people see the backwaters for a night. This runs their entire length — from Kumbalam below Kochi down through Kumarakom, Kuttanad and Kayamkulam to Alumkadavu, which is where the kettuvallam was first converted and where the boats we use still come from. One boat, four nights, and the canals get narrower as you go.

Route

  1. Kumbalam
  2. Kumarakom
  3. Pulincunno
  4. Kavalam
  5. Champakulam
  6. Kayamkulam
  7. Alumkadavu

What stays with you

  • 01Four nights moored in four different villages, not one jetty
  • 02Kuttanad, farmed below sea level, from the canals that drain it
  • 03Kayaking into water the houseboat cannot reach
  • 04Kathakali one evening and kalaripayattu another
  • 05The church at Champakulam, and the paddy bunds around Nedumudy
  • 06Alumkadavu at the end, and the yard the boats are built in

Day by day

A shape rather than a timetable. Days move, and most people move one or two of them.

1

Board at Kumbalam at midday. Through the Kochi backwaters, and the first night at Kumarakom on the Vembanad.

2

A village walk, then kayaking the small canals. Slowly into the Kuttanad paddy country; the night at Pulincunno.

3

Out early, when the light and the canal traffic are both worth being up for. Interior Kuttanad by canoe. The night at Kavalam.

4

Kainakary, the church at Champakulam, then Nedumudy, Thottappally and Thrikkunnapuzha. Kayamkulam by evening.

5

An early cruise past Amritapuri, and off the boat at Alumkadavu between half nine and eleven.
