Kerala with children
Ten days built around what children actually like doing.
The journey
The same places as any other Kerala itinerary, arranged differently: shorter drives, something to do rather than something to look at, and a beach at the end rather than an airport. Bicycles at Alleppey, a cooking lesson children are allowed to ruin, a night on a boat, elephants at Periyar, and tea estates you walk into rather than photograph from the car.
Route
- Fort Kochi
- Munnar
- Periyar
- Alleppey
- The backwaters
- Mararikulam
What stays with you
- 01Kathakali at Fort Kochi, with the make-up being put on beforehand, which is the part children watch
- 02A walk up through the tea at Kolukkumalai rather than a viewpoint
- 03Periyar: the spice garden, and the lake first thing
- 04Bicycles along the bunds at Alleppey, which are flat and have no traffic
- 05A night on the houseboat, and the crew who will show them how it is steered
- 06Mararikulam at the end — two days of beach and nothing scheduled
Day by day
A shape rather than a timetable. Days move, and most people move one or two of them.
1 – 2
Fort Kochi. The nets, the synagogue, the streets, and Kathakali on the second evening.
3 – 4
Up to Munnar. One day for the drive and the estates, one for the walk at Kolukkumalai.
5 – 6
Periyar. The spice garden, the lake at first light, and an easy trek for anyone who wants it.
7
Down to Alleppey. Bicycles in the afternoon and a cooking lesson before dinner.
8
Onto the boat, and a night on the water.
9
Off at Mararikulam. The beach, and nothing else.
10
The morning free, and out through Kochi.
