A canoe on a narrow canal in Kerala

Kerala, unhurried

Six places almost no itinerary includes, and two or three nights in each.

The journey

This is the one we build for people who have decided not to see very much. Poovar, where a river meets the sea behind a sandbar; Quilon at the southern end of the backwaters; Nedumudy in the middle of the Kuttanad paddy; Vagamon, a grassland ridge the guidebooks have not caught up with; and Vypin, an island off Kochi with a beach on one side and the harbour on the other. Nothing on the list is famous. That is the point of the list.

What stays with you

  • 01Poovar, reached by boat, where the Neyyar comes out behind a sandbar
  • 02The Ashtamudi lake at Quilon, which is the backwaters without the traffic
  • 03Nedumudy, below sea level, where the paddy is worked off the bunds
  • 04Vagamon's meadows and pine ridge, at fifteen hundred metres
  • 05Vypin — a beach, a Portuguese fort at Pallipuram, and the harbour mouth
  • 06Two or three nights everywhere, so that nothing is a stop

Day by day

A shape rather than a timetable. Days move, and most people move one or two of them.

1

Into Trivandrum and down the coast to Poovar.

2 – 3

Poovar. The estuary by boat, the beach on the far side of it, and the backwater behind.

4 – 5

North to Quilon and the Ashtamudi. Cashew, coir, and the Chinese nets at Thangassery.

6 – 7

Nedumudy, in the middle of Kuttanad. Canoes along the bunds; the paddy at the hour it is worked.

8 – 9

Up to Vagamon. The meadows, the pine forest, and the walk along the ridge.

10 – 12

Down to Vypin. Three nights: the beach, the fort at Pallipuram, and Fort Kochi across the water whenever you want it.

13

Out through Kochi.
