Mysore Palace lit at night

Karnataka and Kerala

Mysore, a tiger reserve, the Malabar coast and the backwaters. Also one of ours.

The journey

Another journey we have actually run, north to south. It starts in Bangalore and comes down through Mysore into Bandipur for two safaris, then crosses into Kerala at Kannur — which is Theyyam country and almost never on an itinerary — and takes the train south to Kochi. After that it is the route we know best: Kumily, the backwaters, and the coast at Kovalam.

Route

  1. Bangalore
  2. Mysore
  3. Bandipur
  4. Kannur
  5. Kochi
  6. Kumily
  7. Alleppey
  8. Kovalam
  9. Kanyakumari

What stays with you

  • 01Mysore with a guide — the palace, and the market, which is the better half
  • 02Two safaris at Bandipur, an evening one and a morning one
  • 03Kannur, for the north Malabar coast and the weaving around it
  • 04The train down to Kochi, which is how people here actually travel
  • 05Chacko's spice plantations at Kumily, and the Green Walk in the park
  • 06A night on a houseboat, then Kanyakumari and Padmanabhapuram at the end
