A Portuguese church in Goa

Bombay to Goa, down the coast

The Konkan road, which is the part of the drive everybody skips.

The journey

Everybody flies Bombay to Goa in an hour. The coast in between is a week: fishing villages, a sea fort at Murud that has never been taken, the hill station at Mahabaleshwar where Bombay went to escape itself, and the temple beach at Ganpatipule. Goa at the end gets three days, which is enough for Old Goa and Panjim without pretending it is a beach holiday.

  1. Mumbai
  2. Murud
  3. Mahabaleshwar

What stays with you

  • 01Bombay properly: Victoria Terminus, the Gateway, Crawford market, and the dhobi ghat
  • 02Murud-Janjira, a fort in the sea that was never taken by anyone
  • 03Mahabaleshwar at fourteen hundred metres, and Pratapgarh below it
  • 04Ganpatipule, where the temple is on the beach rather than above it
  • 05Old Goa: Bom Jesus, the cathedral, and St Francis
  • 06Fontainhas at Panjim, which is the last Portuguese quarter left standing
